Once you have your items sorted, you can begin to pack them. It’s best to group items in boxes according to room, which will make the unpacking and unloading process go more quickly. However, sometimes things just don’t fit together. Do you best to keep things together, but don’t worry if you cannot make it work perfectly. Just be sure to label boxes appropriately. Here are some more detailed tips for packing your belongings safely and for best efficiency while moving:
- It is ideal for like items to be packed together. For example, pack small books together in small boxes to avoid ultra-heavy boxes full of books. Pack larger books together in a larger box, but avoid packing too many together at once.
- Use old newspaper and tissue paper (even scrap paper that has been printed on one side works, your recycling bin is a great source for packing material!) around the sides of boxes to create a cushion layer.
- Wrap fragile items individually before placing in a box.
- Items that require extra attention, such as fine china, glasses, and dishes can be packed in cartons specially designed for this purpose. Request a china barrel or dishpack box from us. Note: Do not use newspaper to pack your glassware as the ink tends to rub off and become stuck at the bottom of your glasses.
- Pack clothing in a wardrobe box so your clothes are transported hanging upright, just as they would in your closet. This will prevent you from having to iron your entire wardrobe or having to hang everything on hangers again when you unpack.
- We can provide you with mirror cartons, which are specially designed for your mirrors and framed pictures.
- We will use stretchwrap to protect your furniture before we load it onto our truck.
- As you work from room to room, designate an area in each space for completely packed boxes. Stack boxes according to weight to make the loading and unloading go faster.
- Try to keep your boxes under a maximum weight of 50 pounds.
- Leave the grunt work to us! It’s best to have the movers pack things like large appliances, marble and glass table tops, and other large items like pool table and pianos.
