Pets, like children, can become anxious and stressed during a move. Since it is difficult to convey to them what is really happening, it is best to bring as much familiarity and comfort to them while moving. Anything that can help your pet feel secure is a good practice. Here are some suggestions for making your move with pets a success:
- If your pet will be riding in your vehicle to your new home, then make sure they are comfortable with your vehicle. Take them for frequent, short rides around town to get them acclimated to your automobile.
- Select a kennel that best fits your pet’s size and is well ventilated. It should be large enough for your pet to move around a bit.
- For air travel, contact the airline ahead of time to discuss what measures to take for a smooth flight. Mark your kennel with the words “Live Animal” along with your new address, phone number, and any other pertinent information. After you board the plane, ask the flight attendant to verify that your pet has in fact been safely boarded as well.
- Schedule a visit to the veterinarian before your trip. Discuss what vaccinations to get and get copies of any paperwork you need (like their rabies vaccination certificate, proof of license, etc.). Update their license and ask your vet about tranquilizers or other options to help your pet cope with anxiety. You may not need them, but having them with you may be a good idea.
- Avoid feeding your pet or several hours before your trip. This will help avoid car sickness.
- Do bring plenty of fresh water and toys for your pet. Make frequent stops so your pet can walk, drink and get themselves “grounded” before getting back into the vehicle. If you feel like you need to stop and stretch your legs, then probably so does your pet.
- For small pets like hamsters and birds, consider cloaking their cage with a blanket or cloth. This will help calm their nerves during the move.
