Moving can take a toll on your things and that’s why we do our best to make sure your belongings are transported as gently as possible. Packing them correctly helps protect your things and makes the moving process more efficient. Here are a few tips to help make your moving experience safer, faster, and easier:
- Days before your movers arrive, sort through your belongings. Start by browsing through each room and make a pile for each category: items to be loaded onto the truck, items to be donated or thrown out, items to be placed in storage, and items that need to stay with you during the move.
- You may choose from three packing options: full-service pack (we pack everything for you), fragile-only pack (we pack only fragile items for you), and self-pack (you pack everything yourself).
- Set aside any special items that you cannot pack yourself or those you are unsure how to wrap/pack safely. Odd-shaped or fragile items are great candidates for us to pack for you because we have all of the proper materials at our disposal (choose fragile-only pack or full-service pack).
It’s easy to overlook the basics when you are overcome with excitement (and sometimes anxiety) about your big move. Here are some friendly, common sense reminders for packing:
- Start packing items that you use the least like things in your attic or basement. You don’t want to get excited and pack your entire kitchen when you still need to cook meals for a few days!
- Obviously, try to pack heavy items on the bottom of boxes followed by lighter items on top.
- Use your better judgment. If something looks unstable or a box feels too heavy to hold together during transit, you may want to rethink the way it is packed.
- We can disassemble larger items like bed frames and baby cribs. We will put together and label all hardware and put it them together in a master hardware box for you.
Safety First
It may seem economical to keep everything in your house and take it to your new location. However, there are some items that are simply too dangerous to pack and ship. Here are some examples:
- Paint thinners
- Nail polish remover
- Aerosol cans
- Fireworks
- Gasoline
- Matches
- Firearms
- Propane cylinders
- Chemicals
You can always replace nail polish remover and other items that are unsafe to ship. Other items are irreplaceable. You will want to pack these, but bring them with you instead of on the moving truck:
- Family photos
- Keepsakes
- Jewelry
- Family heirlooms
- Anything with irreplaceable, sentimental value
- Firearms (check regulations for traveling with firearms in different states and countries)
- Prescription drugs you may need immediately upon arrival
